To me this is the hardest muscle to get a good workout everything always feels awkward and tough to get a contraction like other muscles, so I'm wondering what you guys do to hit your abs heavy?

Abdominal vaccums and leg raises lying on a swiss ball while grasping a bar or post overhead.
Try using a swiss ball for exercises - great range of motion and stretch can be had with them.

Hanging Leg Raises superset with Cable Crunches are my bread and Butter
